John D Fuller, Sr was born May 23, 1946, in Thomson, Georgia. At age 9, he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ and by 17, he was licensed to preach by his membership church, Jones Grove Baptist Church. He graduated from Raymond Luther Norris High School in 1965. He later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fayetteville State University and obtained his Master of Divinity Degree from Morehouse School of Religion, Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He also received three honorarium Doctor of Divinity Degrees, from Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg, Virginia, Shaw Divinity School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, also honored him with the Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree. After a three-year stint in the United States Army, John D Fuller, Sr. entered ministry full-time.

From December 1969 to October 1973, he served the congregations of Baptist Union Missionary Baptist Church and Beauty Spot Missionary Baptist Church. In October 1973, he was installed as pastor at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. During his pastorate of Lewis Chapel, Reverend Fuller was active in various Baptist religious circles. Locally, he served as the Moderator of the Union Baptist Association; Statewide, he was President of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Incorporated, and Nationally, he was the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Morehouse School of Religion, while serving as Secretary of the Executive Board of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, and Board Member of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Incorporated. 

 

Under the pastoral leadership of John D Fuller, Sr., Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Incorporated, encompassed many ministries, facilities and disciples. The congregation grew and its campuses expanded to four locations throughout the Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Raeford, and Spring Lake, North Carolina communities.

After forty-two years of service as Senior Pastor at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, John D Fuller, Sr. came out of retirement to pastor Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church in Raeford, North Carolina from 2015-2017. In 2018, he continued his ministry as Interim Pastor at Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Dr. Fuller established Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in 2018 with his son F. Bernard Fuller who is senior pastor.
